What Happened to the Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight Motorcycle?

With over a century of motorcycle production under its belt, Harley-Davidson has built an impressive and iconic lineup of road-worthy bikes. The Sportster line, which includes some of the brand’s most beloved models, has been a standout since its introduction. Among the notable entries was the Forty-Eight, a modern classic that joined the Sportster family in 2010.

Named after Harley-Davidson’s classic "peanut" fuel tank from 1948, the Forty-Eight quickly gained attention for its distinctive style and retro-inspired design. While some riders appreciated its unique look, others praised its performance in both urban and highway settings.

The Forty-Eight remained a key model for over a decade, but the 2022 model year marked the end of its production. This change was part of Harley-Davidson’s broader strategy to evolve its lineup. The decision to phase out the Forty-Eight was tied to the company's shift away from the Evolution (Evo) engine that had powered many of its Sportster models. Instead, Harley-Davidson introduced newer Sportsters equipped with the Revolution Max engines.

The end of the Evo-powered Sportsters also meant the conclusion of other models like the Iron 883 and Iron 1200, marking a significant transition for the brand. The Evo engine, developed during a challenging period for Harley-Davidson, was instrumental in the company’s revival and has a legacy that fans continue to celebrate.
