Winnipeg police report a sharp rise in motorcycle thefts in 2024.

Motorcycle thefts are rising in 2024, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.

Recent data reveals that between January and July this year, there have been 122 reported thefts of motorcycles or mopeds. This marks a 72% increase from 2023 and a 52% rise over the past five years.

Const. Claude Chancy of the Winnipeg police explained in an email to CTV News, "Motorcycles without anti-theft measures are prime targets for thieves, as they can be easily rolled or lifted onto transport vehicles."

Daniel Trach, General Manager of Harley-Davidson Winnipeg, isn't surprised by these statistics. "We've seen a noticeable rise in thefts, similar to what we observed after COVID. It’s been an issue affecting our customers recently," Trach noted.

Trach, who has been with Harley-Davidson Winnipeg for 18 years, observed, "Theft used to be rare, but in recent years, it’s become a significant problem."

Both Trach and the police advise investing in anti-theft devices. Police recommend using at least two devices when parking your bike, such as a steering lock, ignition lock, clutch or brake lever lock, tire lock, or chain system. A GPS tracker is also suggested in case of theft.

"While having a GPS tracker is helpful, we advise against attempting to recover a stolen bike yourself. Instead, provide the information to the authorities to aid in their investigation," Chancy added.
