Sure, there might be an American motorcycle brand that predates Harley-Davidson, but none bear quite as robust a legacy. Despite moving some aspects of its business overseas, Harley-Davidson has been manufacturing motorcycles in the U.S. for over a century, and that isn't likely to change anytime soon.
Over that span, Harley-Davidson has built its reputation on a celebrated lineup of motorcycles that rank among the most iconic to ever grace the world's roads. The company's leadership team has recognized this legacy, launching a campaign to celebrate some of the best from Harley-Davidson's legendary lineup through a series of limited edition builds that put a modern spin on beloved bikes.
Harley-Davidson calls this series The Icons Motorcycle Collection. Since 2021, they've added one classic build from their storied catalog each year. Here’s a look at the iconic bikes Harley-Davidson has remade for the modern world.
Harley-Davidson's Electra Glide Revival in 2021
Choosing the first bike for Harley-Davidson's Icon collection was no doubt challenging, but the Electra Glide, regarded as one of the best builds from the 1960s, was a wise choice. Debuting in 1965 with features like an electric starter and the iconic "Batwing" fairing, the Electra Glide quickly became a jewel of Harley's grand touring bike set.
The 2021 Revival is based on the 1969 Electra Glide, maintaining the original frame and branding while incorporating modern features like a custom paint job, a Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine, the Reflex Defensive Rider System, and an Apple CarPlay-enabled Boom! Box GTS 6.5 Radio, in a limited run of just 1,500 units.
The 2022 Low Rider El Diablo Inspired by the FXRT
The 1980s were tough for Harley-Davidson, but the FXRT builds of 1983 were a bright spot. With a sportier design, the FXRT attracted new riders despite some initial resistance from longtime fans. The FXRT’s enduring appeal made it a natural choice for the Icon Collection, leading to the 2022 Low Rider El Diablo.
The Low Rider El Diablo features the FXRT Sport Glide’s frame-mounted fairing, a vintage-inspired custom paint job, and a build-specific devil-horned Harley-Davidson logo. Modern enhancements include the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine, a high-end Rockford Fosgate audio system, and upgraded suspension and handlebars for better posture and performance.
The 2023 Electra Glide Highway King
For 2023, Harley-Davidson revisited the 1960s with a contemporary upgrade of the 1968 Electra Glide FLH, a model known for its Shovelhead engine and electric starter. The 2023 Highway King offers 1,750 units in the original orange-on-black color scheme or in Hi-Fi Magenta and White Birch.
The '68 Electra Glide's fork-mounted fairing and windshield are retained, alongside modern features like the Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine, enhanced audio systems, and advanced safety features such as Electronically Linked Brakes, Traction Control, and Vehicle Hold Control.
The 2024 Hydra-Glide Revival
The latest addition to the Icons Collection is the 2024 Hydra-Glide, revisiting the celebrated post-WWII build. Originally debuting in 1949, the Hydra-Glide came into its own in the 1950s with a Panhead engine and a telescoping hydraulic fork.
The 2024 revival maintains the sleek frame of the 1956 FLH, featuring a vintage rivet and tassel look with embroidered rosettes. Modern upgrades include a Milwaukee-Eight 114 engine, the Screamin' Eagle High-Flow air cleaner, and cruise control, offered in the striking Redline Red colorway.
